Handel Acis and Galatea HWV49
The HÂþ» Baroque Orchestra and Choir come together for a concert performance of one of the pinnacles of Handel’s operatic output, telling a thrilling story of power and passion.
Based on the story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Handel’s Acis and Galatea was originally written for a private performance in 1718, and was revived by the composer in 1739 – the version performed during this concert.
The work was successful during Handel’s lifetime and has continued to be a firm favourite of the opera repertory, much loved for its thrilling storytelling, elegant harmonic writing, and abundance of feeling and character.
