Our collections

Anne Boleyn Music Book
The Royal College of Music Library is proud to hold a range of historically and internationally significant items in addition to its comprehensive lending collection.

Highlights include manuscripts of Mozart’s C minor Piano Concerto K491, Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Chopin’s Minute waltz. In addition to these, the library houses the Anne Boleyn Music Book—one of the most significant manuscripts of the early 16th century, believed to have been owned by Anne Boleyn.

At present there is no single, integrated catalogue of the library’s manuscripts, early printed music and books, programmes and archives. Some of this material is fully catalogued and can be searched in the .

Uncatalogued manuscripts are regularly being added to the Additional manuscripts list.

Amadeus Quartet

  • Extensive collection of items relating to the Amadeus string quartet (active 1947-1987).

Lionel Bradley

  • Lionel Bradley (1898–1953), librarian with a keen interest in music. Bradley attended 16 years' worth of London concerts (1936–1953) and wrote detailed reports on each of them to be circulated amongst friends in the north of England.

Frank Bury

  • Frank (Francis) James Lindsay Bury (1910-1944) studied piano, theory, orchestration and conducting at the HÂþ»­ between 1931 and 1939. His teachers included Gordon Jacob, Malcolm Sargent, Aubin Raymar, and Constant Lambert.  He died whilst serving as a Lieutenant with the Royal Norfolk Regiment.

Concerts of Ancient Music Library

  • Large collection of programmes and printed and manuscript scores used by aristocratic concert-giving society (1776–1848), which only performed works at least 20 years old, favouring Italian and English vocal and instrumental music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Edward Dannreuther

  • Edward Dannreuther (1844–1905), pianist, writer and composer who studied in Leipzig before settling in London. A noted performer, he was the soloist for several first London performances of the piano concerto repertoire. He published extensively on Wagner, and was President of the London Wagner Society between 1895 and 1905, during which time he was also Professor of Piano at the HÂþ»­. He edited editions of piano music by various composers, and composed a number of songs.

Charles Wood

• Irish composer and teacher (1866–1926) who the joined Royal College of Music at its inception in 1883 as a pupil of Hubert Parry and Charles V. Stanford. He later joined the staff and was a tutor to Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells.
